Measurement Uncertainty in ISO/IEC 17025 Calibration, Explained

What measurement uncertainty is, how a calibration lab calculates it, and how to use it when you decide whether an instrument passes.

Measurement uncertainty is a requirement of ISO/IEC 17025:2017. It describes the range within which the true value of a measurement is expected to lie, at a stated level of confidence. It is not the same as error. Error is the difference between the instrument reading and the reference value. Uncertainty tells you how far you can trust that difference.

A calibration laboratory builds an uncertainty budget for each type of measurement. Typical contributions include the reference standard's own calibration uncertainty, its drift since that calibration, the resolution of the instrument under test, repeatability and environmental conditions such as room temperature. These are combined, usually as a root sum of squares, and multiplied by a coverage factor (k = 2 for about 95 % confidence) to give the expanded uncertainty shown on the certificate. The smallest uncertainty a lab can achieve for a given measurement is its CMC (Calibration and Measurement Capability), published in its scope of accreditation.

For users, uncertainty matters when deciding pass or fail. If a thermometer reads 0.4 °C high, its tolerance is ±0.5 °C and the uncertainty is ±0.2 °C, the result is too close to the limit to call a clear pass. ISO/IEC 17025 requires the lab to agree a decision rule with the customer before stating conformity, and that rule may include guard-banding. Veta Infinity's certificates, issued under ENAS accreditation NAL 228, report the measurement uncertainty, and our team can explain how to apply it to your own tolerances.
